Is Your JATC Protected?

Sydnie Weller - Monday, August 05, 2019

Joint Apprenticeship Training Committees (JATCs) and labor unions face similar risk exposures. Training centers create worksite-like-senarios to educate apprentices about the trades—students could suffer the same losses as a union worker. Union Services Agency offers two different coverages to protect JATCs.

An Educator’s Liability Endorsement can be added to Union Liability insurance to cover JATC training centers. This endorsement can stand alone as a policy or can be named as an additional insured on the Union Liability policy. The endorsement protects the JATC in the event of a claim caused by a graduate misusing the skills they learned from the JATC. Educator’s Liability covers lawsuits, defense costs, damages, judgments, and settlements.

Accident Death and Dismemberment Insurance (AD&D) covers apprentices, instructors, journeymen, training directors, and committee members participating in training events under the direction of the JATC. AD&D student accident insurance provides coverage at training facilities and training events, as well as protection to those driving to and from such training.

These two options provide the necessary coverage for JATC programs. Apprentices are the future of unions. It is important they are protected as they begin their career in the trades.
